許淵沖是誰？“詩譯英法唯一人”！

6月17日上午，我國翻譯界泰斗、北京大學(xué)新聞與傳播學(xué)院教授許淵沖先生在北京逝世，享年100歲。

許淵沖是誰？

生于軍閥混戰(zhàn)的亂世，炮火中求學(xué)于西南聯(lián)大，27歲留法，30歲歸國；他是錢鐘書的得意門生、楊振寧的同窗摯友、俞敏洪的授業(yè)恩師；首獲國際翻譯界最高獎(jiǎng)“北極光”的亞洲翻譯家……

這一堆“標(biāo)簽”不如他在名片上印的簡單直接：

“書銷中外百余本，詩譯英法唯一人”

有人婉言相勸：這會(huì)不會(huì)顯得“不謙虛”？他理直氣壯地回應(yīng)：“這是實(shí)事求是！我的名字比名片還響！”是的，他有十足的底氣——

因?yàn)樗袊x者認(rèn)識(shí)了于連、哈姆雷特、包法利夫人、羅密歐與朱麗葉……

因?yàn)樗鞣绞澜缰獣粤死畎住⒍鸥Α拙右住⑻K東坡、李清照、湯顯祖……

從夜里“偷時(shí)間”的人

暢春園的一棟老樓，總有一抹暖色很晚才沉入夜幕，那是許淵沖書房的燈光。退休以后，許淵沖每天在那里對(duì)著臺(tái)式電腦，從晚上十點(diǎn)工作到凌晨三四點(diǎn)。晚上對(duì)他而言是黃金時(shí)段，是“高產(chǎn)期”。

每天連續(xù)面對(duì)電腦屏幕長達(dá)六七個(gè)小時(shí)，許淵沖樂此不疲，堅(jiān)持將自己每日的翻譯成果一字一字地敲進(jìn)電腦文檔。

在耄耋之年，許淵沖仍然制定了“每天翻譯1000字”的工作計(jì)劃，93歲時(shí)制定了翻譯莎士比亞全集的目標(biāo)。

“要將一個(gè)國家創(chuàng)造的美

轉(zhuǎn)化為世界的美”

1948年，許淵沖赴法留學(xué)。新中國成立時(shí)，許淵沖身處巴黎，在心中抱定讀成歸國的志向。

兩年后，31歲的許淵沖學(xué)成歸國。在大學(xué)執(zhí)教的同時(shí)，繼續(xù)著自己對(duì)翻譯事業(yè)的熱忱。之后幾年時(shí)間，他出版了英譯中《一切為了愛情》、中譯英法《毛澤東詩詞》等，成為我國將中國詩詞譯成英法韻文的第一人。

毛澤東的詩詞中有一句“不愛紅裝愛武裝”，許淵沖將其譯為“To face the powder and not to powder the face”。在英文中，“face the powder”意為“面對(duì)硝煙”，“powder the face”則意為“涂脂抹粉”。這兩個(gè)地道表達(dá)是許淵沖大二閱讀英國報(bào)紙時(shí)默默記下的，此時(shí)妙手拈來，豪邁勇健的巾幗形象宛然在目。

1983年，許淵沖到北大教書，后來陸續(xù)翻譯了英文或法文的《詩經(jīng)》《楚辭》《牡丹亭》等中國古典文學(xué)作品，也將《紅與黑》《約翰·克利斯朵夫》等外文佳作譯到國內(nèi)。

他曾說，把一個(gè)國家創(chuàng)造的美，轉(zhuǎn)化為世界的美，這是世界的樂趣，也是他翻譯詩歌的初衷。他不僅盡最大可能保留詩歌的音韻美，更采用了外國人能看得懂的表達(dá)方式，真正實(shí)現(xiàn)了翻譯中的文明互通，架起了一座中外語言之橋。

“好上加好，精益求精

不到絕頂，永遠(yuǎn)不停”

2017年2月，許淵沖做客《朗讀者》節(jié)目。96歲的老人拄著拐杖，徐徐邁入會(huì)場，顫巍巍遞出了一張名片——“書銷中外百余本，詩譯英法唯一人”。乍一聽，似乎有些張狂的意味。可他立馬解釋道：“我實(shí)事求是！”

許淵沖的家中，高懸著“自豪使人進(jìn)步，自卑使人落后”的條幅。房間里那些塞滿舊著新作的書架，是他數(shù)十年的翻譯實(shí)踐累積，是他的底氣。

“好上加好，精益求精；不到絕頂，永遠(yuǎn)不停”，這幾句簡短直白的話，是許淵沖對(duì)自己的學(xué)術(shù)要求。躬耕譯林，許淵沖樂在其中，“不知老之將至”。他常常忘記自己的年齡，只有在面對(duì)蠅頭小字的書本需要拿放大鏡時(shí)，才會(huì)感嘆一句“確實(shí)是老了”。

2007年，他被醫(yī)生診斷為直腸癌，斷言只有7年可活。2014年他卻神采奕奕地站在領(lǐng)獎(jiǎng)臺(tái)上，成為摘得“北極光”杰出文學(xué)獎(jiǎng)的首位亞洲翻譯家。

許淵沖的翻譯之道

許淵沖在翻譯古詩時(shí)自有一套理論。他認(rèn)為，翻譯是追求兩種語言的“雙贏”，求真是低標(biāo)準(zhǔn)，求美是高標(biāo)準(zhǔn)；等值的翻譯容易失掉詩的精華，并且難以出精品。

與其將詩翻譯得味同嚼蠟，嘴里像嚼著一大塊黃油面包似的，不如在不失真的情況下使其優(yōu)化和再創(chuàng)，以確保原詩的內(nèi)蘊(yùn)和存意不流失，在音形上更熨帖、更醒豁，使讀者能從中體味詩詞藝術(shù)的音韻之美。

為了追求譯詩藝術(shù)的高峰，許淵沖在翻譯上遵循孔子提出的“從心所欲不逾矩”的理念，提出“以創(chuàng)補(bǔ)失”“美化之藝術(shù)”的中國學(xué)派翻譯理論，即“意美、音美、形美”三美論、“淺化、等化、深化”三化論和“知之、樂之、好之”三之論，成為翻譯理論界的一大成果。

不管風(fēng)吹浪打，勝似閑庭信步般走過一個(gè)世紀(jì)，他的秘訣就是如此簡單——心無旁騖。“我為什么能活這么久啊？因?yàn)槲颐刻於荚趧?chuàng)造美。我的翻譯是在為世界創(chuàng)造美。”
